Ah, the MacWorld Keynote. Many people look forward to this event with endless anticipation to see what advances the black turtle-neck wearing head of Apple will announce; others dread the event for fear the product they just bought will be suddenly outdated….
First up is the MacBook Air:
A wafer thin ultra portable laptop. Barely 3lbs, with a 13.3″ screen, a full size backlit keyboard, and a Intel Core 2 processor. All while still being about as thick as your index finger. No optical drive, and ethernet plug, wireless internet only. (Hence the name “Air”) The MaBook Air starts at $1799, and won’t be in the store for a few more weeks. Is thin really in for you? If you travel a lot this may be the ticket, otherwise you can still get the normal, faster MacBook (slightly chunkier at 5.1 lbs) for a few hundred less.
Also announced was price cut on the current Apple TV (now $229) and the ability to rent movies. No more trips to Blockbuster, no more checking the mail for NetFlix to arrive. Find a movie, pick it, and start watching, all while never leaving the couch. (Broadband connection required)
The iPod Touch got some feature enhancements as well. Now it has the same email, and note applications as the iPhone, bringing the iPod Touch pretty close to a fully functional PDA. The price remains the same. $299 for the 8GB and $399 for the 16GB. Already have an iPod Touch? The new software can be bought through the iTunes store for only $20.
